Max Romih

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Max Romih ( Croatian Maksim Romić ; born May 22, 1893 in Pinguente , today Buzet in Croatia , † April 24, 1979 as Massimiliano Romi ) was an Italian chess player of Croatian origin.

Romih changed his name to Massimiliano Romi either between receiving his Italian citizenship in 1918 and 1927, or after the San Remo chess tournament in 1930 . It is unclear whether the Italians' problems with the pronunciation of the name Romih or the burgeoning fascism in Italy and the associated ban on foreign names had induced him to do so.

Romih or Romi took part in two unofficial chess Olympiads in 1924 and 1936 and three official chess Olympiads in 1927 , 1931 and 1935 , scoring a total of 31.5 points from 83 games. When participating in the Italian chess championship between 1921 and 1970, he achieved three times second and twice third place.

Further chess successes were the victory in a round-robin tournament with six participants in Scarborough in 1925, the third place in Hyéren in 1926, and the second place in a round-robin tournament with twelve participants in Reggio Emilia in 1947.

Romih lost at the chess tournament in San Remo in 1930 a often fragmentarily reprinted game against Géza Maróczy after he had missed a winning move himself.
