In 1925, Schmitt was promoted from building assessor in the government of the Palatinate to building officer at the Speyer Land Administration . In 1929 he was a building officer there. During this time he also wrote his dissertation on Securing the Speyer Cathedral in the 18th and 20th Centuries and the Foundation Excavations in 1929 and 1931 , which he submitted to the TH Darmstadt in 1931 . Schmitt was in charge of the construction work during the security work on the Speyer Cathedral . The overall processing was the responsibility of Georg Rüth from the TH Darmstadt.

In the time of National Socialism there were plans to build the Technical University of Munich . A preliminary project was carried out by Friedrich Gablonsky , German Bestelmeyer , Roderich Fick and Max Schmitt. Schmitt was commissioned with the new building by Adolf Hitler in 1937 after Roderich Fick rejected it because of overload. Hitler inspected Schmitt's models and facade designs in May 1938 and largely agreed to the conception. The complex for the Technical University should have been built in Nymphenburg , but was discontinued shortly after the foundation stone was laid in 1938.

In 1939, Government Building Councilor Schmitt was transferred from the Landbauamt München to the Landbauamt Kaiserslautern , where he was appointed building authority director. In 1946 he worked in the state road and port administration.

After the end of the war, Schmitt became a senior executive and later a ministerial advisor in the Ministry of Finance and Reconstruction in Rhineland-Palatinate . In this function he was involved in the organization of the reconstruction of the Constantine Basilica in Trier . At the end of his career he hit the headlines because of a real estate affair, where he was appointed as an appraiser for the then Minister-President of Rhineland-Palatinate , Peter Altmeier .
