Georg Rüth

Georg Rüth (born November 15, 1880 in Zwingenberg (Bergstrasse) , Grand Duchy of Hesse , † February 14, 1945 in Dresden ) was a German civil engineer and university professor who dealt with the restoration of historic buildings.

Live and act

Rüth graduated from secondary school in Darmstadt in 1900 and then studied civil engineering at the Technical University of Darmstadt , where he passed the main diploma examination in 1905. As early as 1904 he was an assistant at the university and from 1911 lecturer for building construction and industrial buildings. From 1907 to 1919 he worked full-time for the construction company Dyckerhoff & Widmann . In 1919 he completed his habilitation as a private lecturer at the Technical University of Darmstadt . In 1920 he founded his own engineering office in Darmstadt. In 1925 he became an extraordinary professor for hydraulic engineering, road construction and bridge construction at the Technical University. In 1931 he was appointed professor for building design and industrial buildings at the Technical University of Dresden . There he founded and headed a model building department for building construction. In November 1933, Rüth signed the professors' commitment to Adolf Hitler at German universities and colleges . He was a member of the Free German Academy for Urban Development .

Georg Rüth dealt in particular with historical building structures such as the Mainz Cathedral , the Holsten Gate and the leaning tower of the upper church in Bad Frankenhausen. In the 1930s he examined the Marienkirche in Lübeck . From 1938 to 1942 he was in charge of the damage assessment and renovation measures at the Dresden Frauenkirche . A reinforced concrete ring anchor was attached to the inside of the dome and the pillar foundations were enlarged. In 1945 he was killed in the bombing of Dresden , which also destroyed the Frauenkirche.

The Technical University of Darmstadt awarded him an honorary doctorate in 1929 (as Dr.-Ing. E. h.).
