Maximilian Janisch (born August 8, 2003 in Meierskappel , Canton of Lucerne ) is a highly talented Swiss youngster who passed the mathematics test at the Abitur level at the age of nine. With an intelligence quotient of 149+, he is above average. He is committed to opening up universities to young talent.

Life

Maximilian Janisch was born in Switzerland in 2003 as the son of the retired professor of mathematics Thomas Drisch and his partner Monika Janisch, who had a doctorate in business administration . Janisch skipped three classes of primary school and was admitted to the Immensee high school at the age of eight. At the age of nine he passed the Matura in mathematics at the Immensee high school with top grades.

The then rector of the University of Zurich , Michael Hengartner , and the then director of the Institute for Mathematics, Thomas Kappeler , launched their own funding program for Janisch after he was denied matriculation for the mathematics course at ETH Zurich . The program, which was set up as part of the Junior Euler Society, an initiative of the Institute for Mathematics at the University of Zurich, which offers young people the opportunity to deal with mathematics beyond the curriculum, is led by the Italian mathematician Camillo de Lellis continued to this day.

Janisch was accepted into the second year of study by the French University of Perpignan in September 2015 as the youngest student in France. Because matriculation in Switzerland was not possible. The end of 2019 he graduated from the University of Perpignan License .

After Janisch had completed the full Matura in August 2018, he was allowed to matriculate as a mathematics student at the University of Zurich.

Media echo

After graduating from high school in mathematics, Janisch asked the ETH in vain to be allowed to take part in the courses and in particular in the exams of the mathematics course. A double-digit number of Swiss newspapers and Swiss television took part in the following discussion about the extent to which universities could promote young talent. Newspapers and television companies from neighboring countries intervened in the discussion. In 2015, when the University of Perpignan accepted Janisch's request to take the mathematics exams, the media discussion revived with over a hundred reports, mainly, but not only, in Switzerland and France.

There are several documentaries about Janisch, such as the feature documentary Maximilian (director: Nicolas Greinacher), which premiered in November 2016 at the Foyle Film Festival in Northern Ireland . The Swiss premiere followed in January 2018 at the Solothurn Film Festival. The film won a Grand Prix at the 2018 Rhode Island International Film Festival . 3sat showed the film at the end of August 2018.

Shorter documentaries about Janisch were broadcast on April 26, 2015 and September 8, 2019 by SRF 1 and on June 23, 2015 by 3sat.

Promoting talented young people

Janisch is of the opinion that the performance and motivation of young people is underestimated by society. In addition, he points out in his autobiography that the school system is sometimes not flexible enough, which makes it difficult to adequately promote the talents of children and young people. The University of Zurich has set up a four-year pilot project that enables Zurich high school students to attend regular study modules for one to four semesters.
