Terence Etherton

Sir Terence Michael Elkan Barnet Etherton , MR , QC , PC (born June 21, 1951 ) is a British judge and has been a Master of the Rolls since 2016 .

education

Etherton received his education at Holmewood House School and St Paul's School . After finishing school, he studied history and law at Corpus Christi College of Cambridge University . During his studies he was a saber fencer of the British national fencing team and qualified for the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow .

Professional background

Etherton was admitted to the Gray's Inn bar in 1974 and was appointed Crown Attorney in 1990 . On January 11, 2001, he was appointed as a judge on the High Court of Justice . There he was assigned to the Queen's Bench Division . At the same time he was raised to the nobility . In August 2006 he took over the chairmanship of the Law Commission . On September 29, 2008, he was appointed judge on the Court of Appeal . Associated with this was the appointment to the Privy Council . On January 11, 2013, Etherton was appointed chairman of the Chancery Division of the High Court of England and Wales. He held this position until October 3, 2016, when he followed John Dyson as Master of the Rolls . In October 2016, Etherton was one of three High Court justices to rule on whether the UK's declaration of withdrawal from the European Union under Article 50 of the Treaty on European Union without a prior vote from the UK Parliament can be done.

Voluntary work and awards

Etherton served on the board of the Riverside Mental Health Trust from 1992 to 1999. He headed Broadmoor Hospital from 1999 to 2001 and headed the West London Mental Health NHS Trust in 2000 and 2001.

In 2005 he became an Honorary Fellow at the Royal Holloway College of the University of London . The same position was awarded to him in 2007 at Corpus Christi College, Cambridge University. He was also President of the Nicholas Bacon Society from 2001 to 2013. In January 2009 he was awarded an honorary doctorate from City University London . He has been an honorary professor at the University of Kent since 2011 . In addition, since 2010 he has been lecturing regularly as a visiting professor at Birbeck College .
