Maximilian "Max" Runze (born August 8, 1849 in Woltersdorf , Greifenhagen district , † May 9, 1931 in Berlin ) was a German Protestant pastor, member of parliament and author. He was committed to the dissemination of the works of the composer Carl Loewe .

Life

Maximilian Runze was born as the son of the Woltersdorf pastor into a large family. One of his brothers, Georg Runze (* 1852, † 1938), became professor of theology at the Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität zu Berlin . Maximilian Runze attended the Marienstiftsgymnasium in Stettin , where Ludwig Giesebrecht and Hermann Grassmann were among his teachers . His music teacher, however, was Carl Loewe until 1864 , and Runze would later work on and for his work. After graduating from high school, Runze attended the University of Greifswald . He took part in the Franco-German War from 1870–1871 as a volunteer in the Grenadier Regiment "King Friedrich Wilhelm IV." (1st Pomeranian) No. 2 . In 1876 he became a tutor in Russia.

In 1878 Runze came to Berlin , where he would work until the end of his life. He first became a teacher at the Cathedral Candidate Foundation and was also doing his doctorate at the University of Greifswald on Kant's criticism of Hume's skepticism . In 1882 he became assistant preacher, soon afterwards second pastor, at St. John's Church . Runze held this position until his retirement in 1923.

On November 30, 1909, Runze was elected in a by-election as a member of the Prussian House of Representatives, in which he represented the constituency of Berlin 12 until 1918. He initially belonged to the Liberal People's Party , from 1910 to the faction of the Progressive People's Party .

Runze published philosophical writings and poems. Above all, however, he campaigned for the dissemination of the works of the composer Carl Loewe . In 1882 he was one of the co-founders of the Loewe Association , which of course ended with his death. Above all, Runze published the seventeen-volume complete edition of Loewe's compositions.
