Maynard E. Solomon (born January 5, 1930 ) is an American music producer and co-founder of Vanguard Records, as well as a well-known musicologist .

Career as a music producer

Together with his brother Seymour, Maynard Solomon founded Vanguard Records in 1950. The label was one of the most important to devote itself to the blues and folk music in the 1950s . Solomon produced numerous albums for Vanguard and also wrote the introductory texts.

The first group that Vanguard was able to contract were Pete Seeger & The Weavers . They helped the group to a commercial breakthrough with the recording of the concert they gave in 1955 at Carnegie Hall . Solomon also secured the rights to the Newport Folk Festival . Other artists engaged by Solomon were the black singer Paul Robeson and Joan Baez . In the late 1960s, Vanguard had some success with rock artists, particularly Country Joe and the Fish , now known as Country Joe McDonald .

Solomon was a staunch supporter of Marxism during these years and published the book Marxism and Art in 1973 , which became a standard work. He lives in New York in the Dakota Building .

Career as a musicologist

Solomon later began a second career as a musicologist , specifically as an author of musical biographies, including those of Mozart and Beethoven . In the Mozart monograph he brings up a relationship between the Salzburg composer and the Prague soprano Josepha Duschk , which, however, has not been verified by evidence. In 1972 he formulated a hypothesis for the identification of Beethoven's Immortal Beloved , with which he received a great deal of attention. In 1997 Solomon became a member of the International Musicology Society. His Mozart biography was nominated for the Pulitzer Prize and received the Deems Taylor Award, as did his biography on Beethoven and his studies on Charles Ives . His Beethoven essays were awarded the Otto Kinkeldey Award in 1988 . In addition, Solomon published several essays on psychoanalysis and some books on aesthetics . He was visiting professor at Yale , Harvard and Columbia Universities and at the Juilliard School . In 2016 he was elected a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences .
