McCall is a resort town in Valley County in the US state of Idaho , which is south of Payette Lake in the Payette National Forest .

history

Before the first settlement by Europeans, the Tukuaduka Shoshone and the Nez Perce lived in this area . At the beginning of the 18th century, the fur trader François Payette came to the area. 60 years later, the first miners came to the area in search of gold. They named their settlement Lake City , but the search was unsuccessful, so they moved on. McCall was created from 1889 to 1891 by Thomas McCall and his family. He bought a piece of land on Payette Lake and built a house, school, hotel, and post office on it. He also bought a sawmill from the Warren Dredging Company, which he later sold to the Hoff & Brown Lumber Company.

At the beginning of the 20th century, tourism gained further importance: another hotel was opened in 1902, a tented campsite ( Sylvan Beach Resort ) on Payette Lake in 1906 and a restaurant in 1907. With the opening of the Oregon Short Line (later the Idaho Northern and Pacific Railroad ) in 1914, McCall secured tourism as an important source of income. In 1917, McCall gained Village status .

In 1943 the United States Forest Service established the only fire jump training camp in the country here in McCall . In 1965, Ponderosa State Park was placed under protection on a peninsula .
