The headland was discovered and mapped in February 1962 aboard the icebreaker USS Glacier under Captain Edwin Anderson McDonald (1907–1988). The Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names named her in 1966 after Lieutenant J. F. McCarthy, paymaster on the USS Glacier at the time.
