Meadowlands (German literally: "Wiesenland") is a district of Soweto , which in turn is part of the metropolitan municipality City of Johannesburg in South Africa . It is divided into Meadowlands West and Meadowlands East.

geography

The township settlement Meadowlands is about 14 kilometers southwest of the center of Johannesburg. In 2011 the district officially had 122,594 inhabitants. It belongs to Region D of the City of Johannesburg, which includes all of Soweto.

Meadowlands is in the north of Soweto. To the northwest is the district of Soteba , to the west Dobsonville , southwest Mofolo , south Dube and east Orlando West .

history

The district was established in 1955 under the Group Areas Act of 1950 and the Natives Resettlement Act of 1954 as a settlement for blacks , particularly for displaced residents of the Sophiatown neighborhood, northwest of Johannesburg . The residents were divided into ethnic groups within Meadowlands . The most cost-saving methods possible were used to build the houses.

traffic

The M70 (Motorway 70) runs through Meadowlands in an east-west direction. Railway stations of the Metrorail Gauteng are along the Johannesburg – Naledi Mzimhlope, Phomolong and Phefeni line, each on the border with Orlando West.

Others

The musician Strike Vilakazi (also Vilakezi) published the song Meadowlands in 1956 , which describes the "beauty" Meadowlands' apparently cheerful but actually ironic. The song was also interpreted by Nancy Jacobs and Her Sisters, Miriam Makeba and Dorothy Masuka and is therefore known internationally as a protest song .
