The Mechnikov Peak ( Russian Гора Мечникова Gora Metschnikowa ) is a 2365 m high and prominent mountain in the East Antarctic Queen Maud Land . In the Alexander von Humboldt Mountains of the Wohlthat massif, it rises at the base of a mountain ridge that separates the In der Schüssel and Grautskåla valleys .
He was discovered and photographed from the air during the German Antarctic Expedition in 1938/39 under the direction of polar explorer Alfred Ritscher . Norwegian cartographers mapped it on the basis of surveys and aerial photographs of the Third Norwegian Antarctic Expedition (1956–1960). Participants in a Soviet Antarctic expedition (1960–1961) carried out a new mapping. The latter named the mountain after the Russian geographer Lev Ilyich Metschnikow (1838–1888). The Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names translated the Russian designation into English in 1970.
