Mechthild of Nassau

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Mechthild von Nassau (* before 1280 ; † June 19, 1323 in Heidelberg ) was the youngest child of the Roman-German King Adolf von Nassau and his wife, Countess Imagina von Isenburg-Limburg . She was Princess of Nassau and later Duchess of Upper Bavaria and Countess Palatinate near Rhine through her marriage to Rudolf I of the Palatinate , known as the Stammler .

Live and act

Mechthild was the youngest of eight children, of whom only three other siblings reached adulthood: Gerlach I. von Nassau-Wiesbaden , Walram III. von Nassau-Wiesbaden and Adelheid, abbess of the Klarenthal monastery .

Her husband, Rudolf I, succeeded his father in 1294 and supported his father-in-law, King Adolf von Nassau, in the fight for the throne against his uncle, Albrecht von Habsburg . After Adolf's death, Rudolf joined Albrecht's party, but the new king's strong dynastic policies caused a new conflict. Rudolf's mother, Mathilde von Habsburg, acted as regent for her son Rudolf and for her other son, the future Emperor Ludwig IV. A civil war against Ludwig due to new disputes over the division of Bavaria was ended in 1313 with the conclusion of peace in Munich. Rudolf died in England in 1319 .

Ludwig also took possession of the Rhine Palatinate on the basis of the armed force treaty concluded with his brother Rudolf on February 26, 1317. According to the treaty, Ludwig was to rule alone as long as the throne dispute with the Habsburgs lasted. This war only ended years after Rudolf's death, in August 1322. Only after Mechthild died in June 1323, whose hatred of Ludwig had made a permanent reconciliation impossible, did a reconciliation come about between Rudolf and Rudolf's three sons. In 1329 Ludwig gave the Palatinate back to Rudolf's descendants in the Pavia house contract .

Mechthild died on June 19, 1323 in Heidelberg . She was buried in the Klarenthal Abbey.
