Mechtild Oechsle

Mechtild Oechsle − Grauvogel (born February 20, 1951 in Eislingen ; † March 12, 2018 in Bremen ) was a German sociologist and professor at Bielefeld University .

Career

Mechtild Oechsle studied sociology , political science and German studies from 1970 to 1975 and from 1978 to 1981 at the Justus Liebig University in Giessen . In 1975 and 1977 she passed the first and second state examinations for teaching at secondary schools and secondary schools. From 1981 to 1987 she was a research associate at the University of Bremen in several work and youth sociological research projects. In 1986 she received her doctorate from the Justus Liebig University in Gießen. phil. with the dissertation “Ecological Naturalism. On the relationship between nature and society in ecological discourse ”. From 1988 to 1994 she was a research assistant in the Collaborative Research Center 186 “Status Passages and Risk Situations in the Life Course”, had a postdoc scholarship in the graduate school “Gender Relations and Social Change” and was a research assistant in the social sciences course at the University of Bremen.

From 1994 until her retirement, Mechtild Oechsle was C3 professor for social sciences with a focus on career orientation and the world of work / gender relations at the Faculty of Sociology at Bielefeld University.

Mechtild Oechsle-Grauvogel was married to Michael Grauvogel , the judge at the labor court and later Vice-President of the Bremen State Labor Court , and they have two children.

Research focus and areas of work

Mechtild Oechsle's main research areas were lifestyle and action strategies, cultural models and interpretation patterns in different phases of life and status transitions against the background of structural change in gainful employment and the modernization of gender-specific lifestyle. In many empirical studies, she has examined the life planning of young women, the transition from school to study and work as well as the transition to parenthood and problems of compatibility and work-life balance in the context of work organizations.

She was a participating professor in the DFG graduate college "Gender Relations and Social Change" at the Universities of Bielefeld, Bochum and Dortmund and in the SFB 882 "From Heterogeneities to Inequalities" at Bielefeld University, head of the Interdisciplinary Women's Research Center (IFF) at Bielefeld University and co-editor of the book series "Gender and Society".
