Medpilot (own spelling also: MEDPILOT ) was a virtual specialist library that provides specialist information on the Internet in the field of medicine and related sciences under a uniform interface for research . The offer was operated by the German Central Library for Medicine (ZB MED) in cooperation with the German Institute for Medical Documentation and Information . It is funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG) and by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) as part of the Pact for Research and Innovation . After a preparatory phase since August 2001 and the official activation on February 6, 2003, standard operation began in August 2003. The portal has meanwhile opened up in Livivo .

function

Medpilot complemented the sister project Greenpilot , which covered the subjects of nutrition, the environment and agricultural sciences.

Search queries have been translated automatically. The search was carried out in seven languages across all languages. Synonyms, abbreviations, compound words as well as lay and expert vocabulary were recognized. Typos were corrected and related technical terms were offered to refine the search.

Technical basis

Medpilot used two different research techniques:

  • The research in the "Search Space Medicine" was based on a search technology from Averbis, which was based on computer linguistic principles. Special methods of automatic language processing tailored to medicine enriched the medical texts with linguistic and semantic information, which could later be queried specifically. The search technology offered a wide range of filtering and sorting options specializing in the fields of medicine and life sciences .
  • The metasearch made it possible to search the databases that were not included in the index. It was based on the individual feedback from the individual databases.

Content

Medpilot brought together various databases and inventory catalogs under a uniform research interface. In particular, the portal offered the complete PubMed research and a wide selection of German-language medical literature. In addition, 38 specialist databases could be queried. In addition to MEDLINE , the semantic search in the “Medicine search area” also searched the ZB MED OPACs on the subjects of medicine / health and nutrition / environment / agriculture. The metasearch enabled simultaneous searches in several interdisciplinary databases (in particular AWMF guidelines, Deutsches Ärzteblatt , Hogrefe Verlag , S. Karger Verlag , Thieme Verlagsgruppe ) as well as in several specialized databases . In addition, the inventory catalogs of the German Central Library for Economic Sciences (ZBW), the Technical Information Library (IB) and the Electronic Journal Library (EZB) were queried. A number of chargeable databases were also available.

A simple and an advanced search were available. Proven media could be ordered from the ZB MED document delivery service.

Users could set up an account for free to personalize their operation (My Medpilot). In this way, an overview of the document orders and the electronic management of customer data was available.
