Medveđa ( Serbian - Cyrillic Медвеђа ; Albanian Medvegja or Medvegjë ) is a city and capital of the Opština of the same name in southern Serbia , halfway between Leskovac and Pristina , the capital of Kosovo . The border with Kosovo in the southwest is only 23 kilometers away.
Medveđa is one of the three southern Serbian Opštini with a significant Albanian population, but unlike in Preševo and Bujanovac, they do not form the majority here. The area of the Opština Medveđa is 524 square kilometers. According to the 2002 census, there were 10,760 inhabitants in the 44 villages in the municipality, 85 percent of whom were Serbs and 15 percent Albanians . The 2011 census counted 7,296 inhabitants, although the census was boycotted by part of the Albanian population.
