The motor ferry Meersburg was the third ferry on the Konstanz – Meersburg ferry line . In the course of its history it was registered under the names Konstanz (1939–1947), Baden (1947), Bodan (1947–1963) and Meersburg (1963–1975). Today the ferry brought ashore serves as a clubhouse and restaurant.

history

In the course of the 1930s, road traffic on Lake Constance increased steadily, and with it the number of ferry connections between Konstanz and Meersburg also increased . Therefore, on October 1, 1937, a new ferry was ordered from the Bodan shipyard in Kressbronn . The launch of the ferry, baptized with the name Konstanz, took place on April 15, 1939, two weeks later it was taken over into liner service. This meant that two ferries with the same ship name were in service on the ferry line, as Konstanz, nine years older, was not renamed.

After just a few months, the regular liner service was thinned out considerably due to the Second World War and was mainly maintained by the Meersburg . The two Constance ferries were taken over by the Navy and used for experimental purposes. Among other things, torpedoes and mines were tested in the Überlinger See .

After the war, the ferry was used by the French occupation forces as a troop and material transport ship. In the autumn of 1945 the Konstanz was then partly used in regular service again. In 1947 the ship was renamed Baden , but after a short time the name was changed to Bodan to the Bodanrück peninsula , on the eastern tip of which the Konstanz-Staad ferry port is located. From 1948 an unrestricted ferry service was possible again.

When the oldest Lake Constance ferry , Meersburg , built in 1928 and put into operation in 1963 , was decommissioned and replaced by Fritz Arnold , the ship administration initiated the renaming from Bodan to Meersburg .

After 36 years, the Meersburg was replaced by the new Konstanz large capacity ferry and retired on March 27, 1975. She was sold to the Lochau sailing club , which initially used the former ferry as a floating clubhouse. In 1977 she was put on land near Bäumle Harbor . It still serves as a club house and club restaurant today. The ship's name was used again in 1980 for the new Meersburg , a sister ship to Konstanz .
