The Fritz Arnold motor ferry was a car ferry on the Konstanz – Meersburg ferry line .

history

The Fritz Arnold was ordered from the Bodan shipyard in Kressbronn on January 5, 1961 to replace the Meersburg , which was no longer able to cope with the volume of traffic , and commissioned on June 1, 1963. The Fritz Arnold was a more powerfully motorized sister ship to the Thurgau and Hegau ferries . It was the seventh ferry that was procured for the Konstanz – Meersburg ferry line. The ship, which cost almost 3 million DM (almost 1.53 million euros), was named after the former mayor of Konstanz and initiator of the ferry connection, Fritz Arnold . The Stadtwerke Konstanz resisted this name and wanted to take over the name Meersburg from the previous ferry, but could not prevail against the city of Konstanz. In order to get the name Meersburg, the ferry Bodan was renamed.

On July 31, 2002, the Fritz Arnold drifted off course in front of Meersburg for unknown reasons and ran aground 300 m from the ferry terminal. A Voith-Schneider drive was severely damaged in the process, but the ferry was able to be towed free and the journey to Constance continued.

In December 2001 the supervisory board of Stadtwerke Konstanz decided to modernize the existing fleet and build a new one for 2003 (the Tábor ). The Fritz Arnold should then only be kept in readiness as a reserve ship. But a year later it was decided to keep the Fritz Arnold as a vintage car in regular service. Extensive modernization measures began on the ferry at the end of 2003, with a total volume of around 600,000 euros. Among other things, the Fritz Arnold was equipped with new engines with common rail injection technology, which made it the ferry with the lowest emissions. The interior of the ferry was renovated in the style of the 1960s.

After the renovation work on the ferry, an error in the simultaneous renovation of the landing stages delayed the restart of the Fritz Arnold .

In 2010 the new double-end ferry Lodi replaced the Fritz Arnold on the Konstanz – Meersburg ferry route. On January 12, 2012 the Fritz Arnold was decommissioned and in February was scrapped in the Fußach shipyard , with some units being secured for further use.

The Fritz Arnold was the first Lake Constance ferry on which an absolute smoking ban was introduced.

execution

In contrast to newer ships, the Fritz Arnold had three steering wheels. The regular crew of the ferry consisted of three people (skipper, machinist and cashier).
