The motor ferry Lodi is a car ferry on the Konstanz – Meersburg ferry line on Lake Constance . With a length of 81.80 meters, it is the longest ferry that operates on Lake Constance.

The Lodi is the 13th and newest Lake Constance ferry from Stadtwerke Konstanz . The ship was christened on May 8, 2010, before that it was named FS 2010 (for "Ferry 2010"); it has replaced Fritz Arnold .

The ship's name "Lodi" is the name of the Konstanz twin town Lodi in Lombardy ( Italy ).

prehistory

The decision to build the new ferry was made due to the fact that the Fontainebleau , the eighth ferry of the Stadtwerke Konstanz and the fourth ferry of the Thurgau class, had not received a fundamental modernization since it was commissioned in 1970 and the necessary measures threatened to become unprofitable. Following a Europe-wide invitation to tender, the Bodan shipyard in Kressbronn received an order from the Konstanz municipal utility with a volume of 11 million euros.

Building history

The Lodi with a veiled name in front of the ship's christening (left behind the Fritz Arnold )

At the end of July 2008 the first material deliveries for the new ferry arrived at the Bodan shipyard in Kressbronn.

The keel laying of the Lodi took place on October 1st, 2008. In the official act, the construction number was hammered in by the Lord Mayor of Konstanz , Horst Frank , Krister Hennige (head of the ferry service of the Stadtwerke Konstanz), Konrad Frommer and Kuno Werner (managing director).

Parts of the new ferry were manufactured in Szczecin , Poland , and transported individually to Lake Constance. The segments were reassembled at the Bodan shipyard in Kressbronn on Lake Constance . Since the building hall was not sufficient there, the construction took place partly in the open air.

The launch of the Lodi took place on October 14, 2009 in the presence of the management of Stadtwerke Konstanz, who observed the action, which lasted about an hour, from on board the Fritz Arnold . The Fritz Arnold was temporarily used as a tug for the Lodi . A heeling test took place in March 2010 with four new low-floor buses from Stadtwerke Konstanz GmbH, i.e. around 50 tons of heeling weight.

The inauguration ceremony took place on May 8, 2010 between Konstanz and Meersburg on Lake Constance. Godmother was the city councilor Giuliana Cominetti from Lodi, who was responsible for the partnership, together with two children who had won a painting competition beforehand. The ferry was surrounded by six public utility ferries, which were present as spectator ships, at times only a few meters apart.

The double-ended ferry did not replace the Fontainebleau , as originally planned , but rather the Fritz Arnold , which was only equipped with new, low-emission engines in 2003 at a cost of over 600,000 euros .

Ship name

In the autumn of 2008, a citizen's application (with 1,500 signatures) or citizens' petition (with 5,000 signatures) to call the ferry with the working title “FS 2010” based on the Konstanz city partnership with Lodi in Lombardy in Northern Italy “MF Lodi”, which ultimately was also successful. The Lodi is the third Lake Constance ferry , after the Fontainebleau and the Tábor , to be named after a twin town in Constance.

design

The Lodi was modeled after the Tábor , but the technical data differ from one another. At 82.37 meters , the Lodi is a lot longer than the Tábor , which measures 72 meters; compared to her predecessor Fritz Arnold (54 m) she is around 50 percent longer. It also has more modern components, a simpler structure and fewer different materials. Compared to the Tábor , further technical improvements were made in the construction. These include the improved incline of the stairs (less steep), more seats outside, optimized bench materials, a better view from the passenger deck and full use of the four lanes.

As with the Tábor , the outer shape with the curved steel girder arches, which are supposed to symbolize a bridge over the lake, and the large-format glass windows are characteristic of the design of the Lodi .

During the construction of the ship, in addition to a high load-bearing capacity with the lowest possible draft , strict attention was paid to saving fuel consumption. The tests carried out for this purpose in the flow channel of the Shipbuilding Research Institute in Vienna with a wooden model (scale 1:13) gave the Lodi a bulbous bow , which was previously completely uncommon in double-ended ferries. With the large loading area, Stadtwerke Konstanz want to reduce waiting times and increase capacity with the remaining five other ferries by ten percent.
