The motor ferry Tábor is a passenger and vehicle ferry on Lake Constance . It operates as a car ferry Konstanz – Meersburg and connects the ports of Konstanz-Staad and Meersburg all year round with scheduled or shuttle services. With a length of 72 meters and construction costs of 8.6 million euros, it was the largest and most expensive ferry on Lake Constance until the completion of the latest Lake Constance ferry, Lodi .

history

construction

The ferry was laid in July 2003 at the Bodan shipyard in Kressbronn on Lake Constance . The hull was supplied by the Polish Finnomar shipyard in Stettin . With a length of 72 meters and a width of 13.4 meters, she was the largest ship built at the Bodan shipyard at that time. For this reason it was built in several stages. After a 15-month construction period, the motor ferry was completed in April 2004. Their construction costs were “naked” 7.6 million euros. In addition, there were costs for the drives, the interior fittings and a handicapped accessible elevator, so that total costs of 8.6 million euros had to be paid. Originally, the costs were put at six to seven million euros. No state funds were used for the construction of the new ferry. A total of around 150 companies participated in the construction.

Baptism and maiden voyage

The ferry was christened “Tábor” on May 15, 2004 in Staader Hafen and, as the twelfth ferry in the history of the Konstanzer Stadtwerke, eleven years after the Kreuzlingen , it was the newest and largest ferry of the Stadtwerke. The ship's name goes back to the city of Tábor in the Czech Republic , with which the city of Constance is twinned. Stadtwerke Konstanz is thus paying tribute to its Czech twin city and the relationship with the new member state in the European Union.

The christening took place as part of the celebration of the twentieth anniversary of the town twinning. Ina Dedic, the wife of the mayor of Tabor, named the new ferry. Dedic gave the municipal utilities a ship's bell for the christening.

A naming competition was held beforehand, which resulted in 623 name suggestions. But many of the competition participants speculated that the naming had long since been agreed in line with the 20-year city partnership. The request to name a ship after Jan Hus was rejected.

Line operation

Tábor arriving at the Konstanz-Staad ferry terminal

The Tábor , sailing under the German flag , went into regular service in mid-June 2004 and has its home port in Constance . Before that, the team carried out test and practice drives. Since then, it has been in continuous year-round ferry service between Konstanz and Meersburg and replaced the Thurgau , which was taken out of service on January 1, 2004.

The Tábor can transport 700 people and 60 cars or three trucks with an axle load of up to 15 tons and a height of 4 meters together with 15 cars.

In October and November 2004 the Tábor was out of action for several weeks due to drive damage. The fault was in one of the four electric motors fed by a diesel engine. The electric motors that drive the Voith-Schneider propellers had been damaged by mechanical vibrations and had to be repaired and readjusted by the manufacturer as part of the warranty .

Design and implementation

The Tábor in motion

The characteristic outer shape of the Tábor with the transparent design of 780 square meters of glass and the curved steel girder arches heralded a new form of aesthetics in Lake Constance shipping. The curved shape is intended to symbolize the bridge over the lake. They are the widely visible hallmarks of the Tábor planned as a work of art . The ship is part of the overall Ferry 2000 concept , which also includes the redesign of the port facilities and the catamaran connections between Konstanz and Friedrichshafen .

The draft for the revolutionary design comes from the Kressbronn company Idea-Design .

The Tábor is the first Lake Constance ferry to have no intermediate deck, the toilets are on the lower deck. It is handicapped accessible and has an elevator. The separate bicycle parking spaces are also new. The Tábor has a Germanischer Lloyd classification .

Sister ship

The Tabor was awarded with the naming ceremony on May 8, 2010, the same on the design of sister ship: The Lodi .
