The motor ferry Hegau was a car ferry on Lake Constance and the sixth ferry that was put into service on the Konstanz-Meersburg ferry line .
history
The Konstanz-Meersburg ferry line has been an important and widely used ferry connection since it was founded in 1928. After the resumption of regular civil ferry operations after the Second World War and the steadily increasing volume of traffic during the economic boom , the ferry ships Meersburg , Konstanz , Bodan and Linzgau that existed in the mid-1950s were no longer able to handle the ever increasing volume of traffic . That is why the Hegau , like its older and technically identical sister ship Thurgau , was purchased to supplement the ferry fleet.
On January 30, 1956, the Bodan shipyard in Kressbronn was given the order to build the ship. When it was launched on May 27, 1957, the ferry was christened "Hegau". It was named after, along the lines of Linzgau and Thurgau , the landscape of Lake Constance in the West. This made the Hegau the third and last ferry that was named after a Gau . On June 5, 1957, the Hegau began its service.
The Hegau was one of the most powerful ferries, and with the Voith-Schneider propellers it had a very powerful drive compared to the older ferries with propellers . Thanks to these properties, she was used as an icebreaker at the Seegfrörne in 1963 together with the Thurgau in order to keep the fairway clear with special night trips. On February 7th, however, the company surrendered to the 30 cm thick layer of ice and stopped ferry traffic - the first service interruption in the history of the ferry line.
In the winter of 1966/1967 the Hegau was completely modernized. Among other things, the deck was widened, with a lane width of 8.82 meters and a lane height of 3.90 meters, a remote control for the ship's controls and a new toilet system were installed, and the electrical systems were switched to 380 V three-phase current . The total height of the ferry was 12.20 meters (10.70 meters above the waterline).
During the Whitsun flood in 1999 , the ferry service had to be temporarily suspended because the ferry ports were flooded. The Hegau was like Thurgau , the two ferries that could take the ferry longest maintained and the first thing again, but only for pedestrians and cyclists. In order to increase the draft and thus keep the angle of the landing stages flatter, the ferries were loaded with trucks and troughs.
After the commissioning of the Kreuzlingen in 1993, the Hegau was only used as a reserve ship, e.g. B. in express traffic at rush hour. In 2001 it was decided to purchase a new ferry instead of the urgently needed modernization of the Hegau . On May 15, 2004, the Tábor was put into service as the successor to both the Hegau and the Thurgau . The Hegau was then taken out of service at the end of 2004 and scrapped at the Bodan shipyard in May 2006.
