The Überlinger See is the north-western part of the Obersee . The “finger” of Lake Constance is delimited by the ferry connection from Meersburg to Constance and extends to Bodman-Ludwigshafen .
In contrast to the south-eastern main part of the Obersee, which - except according to the Swiss view - is a condominium , the Überlinger See belongs entirely to German territory.
Of the total area of the Obersee of 473 km², the Überlinger See takes up 61 km² and is about the same size as the Untersee . The sea level of the water surface is around 395 m above sea level. NN . With a maximum of 147 m, the water depth of the Überlinger See is significantly less than that of the Obersee with 251 m.
The flower island of Mainau is located on the Constance side of the Überlinger See. Neighboring communities are Meersburg , Uhldingen-Mühlhofen , Überlingen and Sipplingen in the Lake Constance district and Bodman-Ludwigshafen , Allensbach and Konstanz in the district of Konstanz .
In addition to several smaller streams, the Seefelder Aach near Uhldingen and the Stockacher Aach between Bodman and Ludwigshafen flow into the Überlinger See .
In Sipplingen the tapping point is approximately 60 meters deep Zweckverbandes Lake Constance Water Supply , of about 4 million people in large parts of Baden-Württemberg annually about 135 million cubic meters of drinking water supplies. The amount withdrawn corresponds to about 1.25% of the throughput.
Like the whole of Lake Constance, the Überlinger See is a popular water sports area. Because of the steep banks it is also a popular diving area . However, the steep walls, some of which drop to a depth of over 60 m, the limited visibility, changing currents and the water temperature of 4–5 ° C in the depth have their pitfalls, which divers fall victim to almost every year.
As the Überlinger See protected area of Lake Constance , parts of the lake and bank areas are under special protection.
geology
The Überlinger See with its steep bank walls was created by a rift fracture as a result of the folding of the Alps , which was shaped in the Ice Age by the Rhine glacier coming from the south-east, which gouged out the whole of Lake Constance.
The rocky walls are made of molasse , a tertiary sandstone that - given its relatively young age - is quite soft.
In a temporarily stable retreat stage of the Rhine Glacier (Konstanzer Stadium), the Obersee was still covered by the glacier, but the Überlinger See was already ice-free, i.e. a glacier lake at the end of a glacier tongue on which the icebergs that had broken off from the glacier swam. At that time the outflow, and thus the origin of the Rhine, was at the northwestern end near Bodman-Ludwigshafen , in the direction of Radolfzell . The corresponding valley of the then Rhine can be clearly seen between the Radolfzell districts of Stahringen and Reute .
