Meg and Jack White first named themselves The Red and White Stripes after Meg's favorite peppermint candy. The White Stripes were rumored to have been formed on July 14, 1997. They made their first appearance on August 15, 1997 at the Gold Dollar in Detroit, at a newcomer event that had only 10 to 15 people in attendance. The performance was very well received, which Jack White mainly attributed to Meg White's childish drumming. In 1998 the band released their first two singles. In 1999 and 2000 the albums The White Stripes and De Stijl were released . The band initially only achieved local fame.

In the wake of the hype about retro bands in 2002, the album White Blood Cells , released at the end of 2001, was their first big success, with which they also became internationally known. The successor Elephant (2003) brought the commercial breakthrough. The single Seven Nation Army became her best known song. In the same year the band received two Grammys in the categories " Best Alternative Music Album " (for Elephant ) and "Best Rock Song" (for Seven Nation Army ).
