Master Cody - Talasia is an online game for children with dyscalculia and arithmetic problems that was developed by the Düsseldorf company Kaasa health . In global cooperation with several renowned universities as part of the CODY project, the educational game is used today as a diagnosis and therapy medium. Above all, the scientific work of researchers and psychologists at the Westphalian Wilhelms University in Münster under the direction of Heinz Holling has significantly advanced the development of the computer-aided training method.

concept

In the voluntary CODY placement test before the beginning of the learning phase, the child's mathematical ability is assessed. Training with Master Cody three to five days a week is intended to continuously improve the child's cognitive abilities. Effective learning is strived for by dividing the learning content into four different sub-areas of mathematics : basic number processing (e.g. counting , comparing quantities), complex number processing (e.g. number dictation, number line ), arithmetic and working memory . These sub-areas are trained in 19 different task types. Embedding the training in an adventure as well as a reward system should make the training exciting and entertaining. The learning progress can be determined and evaluated in a control test after 30 days.

An evaluation by the University of Münster showed that if the game was used for 30 minutes every day for six weeks, mathematical skills were improved by around 40 percent.

Characters

The main character of the educational game is Master Cody, a traveling and learned magician . He makes contact with the player via his magic crystal ball and explains the individual training games in language appropriate for children. In addition, the player is accompanied by the two royal children, Namea and Fandales, who provide assistance during the adventure. As the game progresses, new characters such as the ice fairy Fahyna or the tree guardian Quoun appear on the scene. These tell stories, give advice or sometimes make the way through Talasia difficult for the player.

commitment

Master Cody - Talasia is mainly used with elementary school children from the second to the fourth grade. Even with kindergarten children, certain preliminary mathematical skills can be improved with the help of serious games . By adapting the requirements individually to the child's learning pace, over- or under-demanding should be avoided. Even children without dyscalculia or numeracy difficulties can train in this way to improve their math skills. In 2015 the educational game was also released on the English-speaking market.
