Mel Batty
Mel Batty (actually Melvyn Richard Batty; born April 9, 1940 , † August 29, 2011 ) was a British long-distance runner .
In 1962 he won bronze at the Cross of Nations and came third in the English marathon championship . At the British Empire and Commonwealth Games in Perth he was starting sixth for England over six miles and fifth in the marathon.
In 1964 he finished eighth in the Polytechnic Marathon , and in 1965, at the same time as the winner Jean Fayolle, he won silver at the Cross of Nations.
He was twice English champion in the ten-mile track run (1963, 1964) and in the cross-country run (1964, 1965).
The marathon runner Eamonn Martin was trained by him.
