Melanie Spath , actually Melanie Späth , (born June 16, 1981 in Flensburg ) is a former German - Irish cyclist who was active on the road , track and mountain bike .

Athletic career

Melanie Spath was born as Melanie Späth in Germany, grew up there and graduated from school. In the early 2000s she went to Ireland for a year and then began studying in Germany. However, she stayed in Dublin and began studying genetics at Trinity College there. She married Irish cyclist Ryan Sherlock , who also trains her, and has been with the Irish Cycling Federation since 2012. She has both Irish and German citizenship.

Spath began her sporting career with martial arts ( Taekwondo and Jiu Jitsu ). After completing her degree in 2005, she turned to cycling, initially on the mountain bike, and began serious training in 2007. In 2010 she finished fourth in the 2010 British XC MTB Series and won that racing series the following year. Also in 2011 she started road cycling and later also track cycling. In 2012 and 2013 Melanie Spath was Irish road racing champion, in the individual time trial she finished second.

From the beginning of 2014, Melanie Spath suffered from a disease of the arteries , had to undergo an operation and was reluctant to exercise. In the 2015 UEC European Track Championships in Switzerland Grenchen she won in the individual pursuit in seventh place and, together with Lydia Boylan , Josie Knight and Eimear Moran Irish foursome finished sixth in the team pursuit .

In February 2018, Spath became the mother of a boy. She announced that she would continue her engagement as a member of the Irish Cyclist Women's Commission. In August of that year she finished third in the single pursuit at the Irish championship.

Honors

In 2009 and 2012 Melanie Spath was named “Cyclist of the Year” in Ireland.
