Melchior Eckhart (also: Melchior Eccardus , born October 18, 1555 in Chemnitz , † January 20, 1616 in Oels ) was a German Protestant theologian.

Life

Coming from a humble background, Melchior Eckhart attended the electoral state school in Pforta . He received an electoral scholarship and enrolled at the University of Leipzig in 1573 . After studying philosophy, he began studying theology, which he finished at the University of Wittenberg . In 1578 he became a private teacher in Görlitz , a year later he went to Lauban as a teacher , where in 1580 he was rector of the city school.

His father-in-law Siegmund Suevus advised him in 1584 to go to Breslau; he was called to the pastor in Domatschine near Oels and ordained on April 12, 1585 in Liegnitz . Also supported by private connections, at the request of the Duke of Oels, Karl II. , He was given a parish office at the castle church in 1586 and in 1593 took over the office of superintendent of the principality.

Melchior Eckhart stayed out of the denominational disputes of his time and tried to maintain a mediating course in church politics. In his ecclesiastical activity he established the priestly convents, oriented them to Philipp Melanchthon's Loci Communes and thus raised the training of the clergy in his area of office. He also participated in the establishment of a church library, organized the school system and occasionally wrote Advent and Passion devotions.
