Büyük Melen Çayı

The Melen Çayı is a river to the Black Sea in the Düzce Province and on the border with the Sakarya Province .

The Melen Çayı rises in the far east of the Düzce province, from where it flows in a western direction through the province and passes the district town of Yığılca . The river is called Küçük Melen Çayı ( küçük = "small") in the upper reaches . It is dammed by the Hasanlar dam . Then it flows in a south-westerly direction north past the provincial capital Düzce . West of the city of Gölyaka on Lake Melen Gölü , the river Aksu Deresi from the west and the smaller Uğur Suyu from the southeast meet the Küçük Melen Çayı. Then the river Büyük Melen Çayı ( büyük = "large") and flows in a northerly direction to the sea 35 km away. The Melen Çayı flows past the small town of Cumayeri . The last 10 km it forms the provincial border with Sakarya . The river flows into the Black Sea near Melenağızı . The Melen Çayı has a length of approx. 100 km. The catchment area of Melen Çayı covers 2317 km².

There are plans to divert water from the catchment area of ​​Melen Çayı to the water supply of Istanbul .
