Melusina von der Schulenburg, Countess of Walsingham
Petronella Melusina von der Schulenburg, Countess of Walsingham (born April 1, 1693 in Hanover , † September 16, 1778 in London ) was a German - British noblewoman .
Life
She was the illegitimate daughter of the Elector of Braunschweig-Lüneburg ("Kurhannover") and later King George I of Great Britain and Ireland (1660-1727) and his long-time mistress , Countess Ehrengard Melusine von der Schulenburg (1667-1743).
Together with her mother she came to England in 1716, where the king gave her the non-hereditary title (Life Peerages) of Countess of Walsingham , in the County of Norfolk , and Baroness Aldborough , of Aldborough in the County of Suffolk on April 7, 1722 , awarded.
On May 14, 1733 she married the Whig Party politician and former Secretary to the Countess of Suffolk , Philip Stanhope, 4th Earl of Chesterfield (1694–1773). The marriage remained childless. It is believed, however, that she had an illegitimate son named Benedict Swingate Calvert (1722–1788) with Charles Calvert, 5th Baron Baltimore .
