Melvin Moore
Melvin "Mel" Moore (born June 15, 1923 in Chicago , Illinois , † February 26, 1989 in New York City , New York ) was an American trumpeter , violinist and singer of swing and bebop .
Mel Moore played with Lucky Millinder from 1944 , then in the Duke Ellington Orchestra (1948/50) and in rhythm and blues bands. In 1951 he took part in the recordings of Dizzy Gillespie ; he sang the tracks "The Champ" and "Swing Low, Sweet Cadillac". In late 1951 he also recorded some vocal titles for King with Terry Gibbs , Billy Taylor , Mundell Lowe and Charles Mingus . In 1957 he was a member of Don Redman's orchestra ; In 1958 he made recordings with the formation of John Pisano and Billy Bean . Between 1964 and 1966 he worked for Gerald Wilson . During this time he also played at the Monterey Jazz Festivals , so in 1964 with Charles Mingus ( Mingus at Monterey ) and with Thelonious Monk ( Live at the 1964 Monterey Jazz Festival ) and in 1965 in the Dizzy Gillespies Monterey Festival Jazz Orchestra . In 1966 he accompanied Johnny Hartman . He then returned to the rhythm and blues area and played in the bands of BB King (1967), Esther Phillips , T-Bone Walker , Don Sugarcane Harris , Johnny Otis (1970), Jerry Garcia (1972), Shuggie Otis and Ted Hawkins (1981).
Moore should not be confused with the singer of the same name, born in 1917, who sang with Jimmie Lunceford and Ernie Fields .
