Mely is an Austrian band founded in 1999. The name is an abbreviation of the word melancholy ( English : Mel anchol y ).

history

The band started with Andreas Mataln and Helmut Waltl coming together. At first only interested in playing and interpreting cover songs, after a few months they switched to writing their own songs. After a few years of experimentation and constant line-up changes on the instruments (rhythm guitar, bass and keyboard), the five founding members Andreas Mataln, his brother Martin Mataln, Peter Lengfeldner, Daniel Huber and Helmut Waltl met in the summer of 1999.

By the end of 1999, the existing material from the early creative period of Andreas and Helmut was supplemented with the new influences of Daniel, Peter and Martin and included on the album "There are days ..." that same year. Through these nine moody, emotional and melancholy songs, the band name "Mely" was finally born during this period. There followed a longer hiatus from songwriting and the band concentrated on concerts.

In 2003 "... Reel Through My Wave ..." was recorded, which emphasizes even more the melancholy influences. With the help of these ten songs they managed to draw attention to themselves for the first time in Austria. So the band fought their way to the finals of the “Austrian Band Contest” and in 2006 also on the main stage of the Metalcamp .

After supporting bands like Ektomorf , Moonsorrow , Anathema and Leaves Eyes , the album “Leave and Enter Empty Rooms” was recorded with producer Mario Lochert by mid-2007. Furthermore, “Mely” was signed with this album by the German label “Black Bards Entertainment”. After a European tour in 2008 with Xandria and Stoneman , Helmut announced that he was leaving the band for private reasons. At the same time, the separation from the label was announced.

At the end of summer 2008, Hannes Ganeider became the band's new drummer and the songwriting for a new album began. The current album “Portrait of a Porcelain Doll” was released worldwide on April 3, 2009 by the German label “Silverwolf Productions”. Another European tour with Dornenreich and Agalloch will be completed at the same time.

After this tour there was another line-up change. Daniel announced that he wants to devote himself to his family and therefore is leaving the band. "Mely" was nominated in summer 2009 for the Amadeus Austrian Music Award in the categories "Hard & Heavy" and "Best Song". Mely celebrated their tenth anniversary in autumn 2009 and introduced the new bass player Michael Angerer on this occasion.
