Men of War ( В тылу врага 2: Лис пустыни ( Behind Enemy Lines 2: Desert Fox )) is a real-time strategy game and a sequel to the 2006 Faces of War . It was developed by Digitalmindsoft in cooperation with Best Way and published by 1C Company , 505 Games and Aspyr Media .

The single player campaigns lead through different battles of the Second World War . They include the advance of the Red Army on Berlin, the airborne battle over Crete and the African campaign from a German and Allied perspective. In multiplayer, the Japanese are added as a playable faction.

Game flow

Men of War is similar to its predecessors, Faces of War and Soldiers: Heroes of World War II, with some major differences. In Soldiers , the player controls a small group of soldiers and fights the enemy. In Faces of War you also control a small number of troops, while you fight large battles alongside many allies . Men of War combines both game concepts. It also happens that the player has to command a large number of units and has to monitor and defend several lines. It thus combines different layers of macro and micromanagement, which was implemented both by setting up trains and individually controlling units. In some scenarios you are also able to request reinforcements, air and artillery strikes. Ships can also be steered for the first time.

units

The many and varied units cover the respective historical scenario of the game. You can have a lot of units fight at the same time. However, fallen or destroyed units will slowly fade over time. Game statistics with several hundred opponents killed at the end of a game are nothing unusual.

control

It is controlled via point-and-click with the mouse or, alternatively, via appropriate buttons. Units can be set target points. The behavior of the unit can be specified e.g. B. "Hold position", "Always attack opponent" or "Don't shoot". For each unit, the player can also do the moving, aiming and shooting himself.

AI

The artificial intelligence is sometimes very mature. Soldiers react to opponents, change independently to the right weapon, treat their wounds, fight the most dangerous enemy or take cover and work independently to the target, taking into account the enemy fire. Soldiers avoid their own vehicles, just like vehicles avoid their own soldiers or guns and other vehicles. The player could run entire battles almost without his intervention. Throwing hand grenades appears to be intentionally reduced. Equipment from the fallen can only be picked up by the player. Both so that the player can intervene more tactically.

editor

The Men-of-War CD also includes an editor for changing or creating playing cards and missions. Maps can be provided with mountains and valleys with a surface designer. The cards can then be equipped with all elements from the game flora, fauna, buildings, soldiers, vehicles, roads, lanterns, fences, sandbags, etc. Because of the sophisticated AI, placing units is actually enough to design your own missions. Otherwise there is still the possibility of mission goals, waypoints, and conditional triggers with commands such as. B. "Throw hand grenade". You can also create your own introductory films and texts in the editor.
