The menhir of Degernau is a prehistoric menhir in the district of Degernau , a district of the municipality of Wutöschingen in the district of Waldshut in Baden-Württemberg .

location

To the east of Degernau and south of the Vogelhof there is a hilltop, the “Bühlhölzle” corridor, with the menhir at its highest point. The exposed location is now on the right of Landesstraße 163 a between Degernau im Wutachtal and Erzingen im Klettgau . In the Klettgau level a Roman road led via Hallau to Iuliomagus near Schleitheim, from which a branch north to the Wutach valley can be assumed. The menhir on the hill marks this transition.

Today the win is agricultural green space . About 400 meters to the west, in the “Toter Mann” corridor, there is a reconstruction of a large stone grave with a “soul hole” ( Degernau dolmen ).

Find history

Joseph Schneider, a teacher from Degernau, was inspired to look for the old name "Beim long stone" and "Vorm long stone" in a district plan of Degernau made around 1700 in the 1930s. In 1954 a student of Schneider discovered the monolith, which was almost two meters in length . At the time of the find, the stone, which was partly lying flat in the ground, only protruded about 10 centimeters from the ground.

Interpretation and whereabouts

The stone was uncovered in an archaeological excavation and assessed by several experts as a prehistoric menhir . Ceramics from the Neolithic Horgen culture were also encountered, as well as stone ware, including square stone axes and chert artifacts.

It has not been proven that the relics are in their original locations - this is considered likely with the menhir on the hilltop. Functions or cultic relationships cannot generally be clearly defined.

The fallen stone was erected again in 1971. There is speculation about a second stone.

At the Langenstein Stadium in Tiengen there is another menhir, the "Long Stone", which is also called Chindlistein in medieval tradition .
