The Meranier-Gymnasium Lichtenfels is a scientific , technological and linguistic high school in Lichtenfels (Upper Franconia) . Around 980 students are taught by 85 full-time teachers (as of September 9, 2013). The school was founded in 1907.

history

After the lessons of the then private secondary school with Latin department began in 1907 in a hall of the elementary school on Kronacher Strasse , the school grew by one year every year. The school was financed by payments from the city and supported by the Realschul-Verein, whose chairman was the lawyer Friedrich Schmidt (1904–1909), then the district administrator Dr. Roth (1909–1912) and finally the basket dealer Wilhelm Fickentscher (1912–1920).

In 1910 the whole building was already rented. At the age of around 14, the students had the opportunity to transfer to the Königliche Realschule or the Königliche Alte Gymnasium in Bamberg after passing an entrance examination .

During the First World War , school hours were reduced from 60 minutes to 40 minutes because more and more teachers were recalled to the front. Eventually, more and more former students were called up, some of whom fell. From 1915 the gymnasium served as a hospital , so that physical education could only take place outdoors. After the war, the school was finally taken over by the city in 1919 and the building and property were acquired on August 2, 1920 for 80,000 marks. The sponsoring association was dissolved in November and the teachers became civil servants . Coeducation was introduced in 1922 .

In 1933 the school was renamed after Hans Schemm . After the end of National Socialism in Lichtenfels, the school served as quarters for US troops until November 1945. Lessons started again a few months later. In 1949 student co-administration was introduced. In 1951, school fees were abolished for all students.

The private secondary school, which was taken over by the city of Lichtenfels in 1919, was integrated into the Bavarian school system in 1958 by the previous municipal level, among other things for cost reasons.

The grammar school has had its current name since 1965. It is reminiscent of the Andechs-Meranier family , an important family in Franconia in the High Middle Ages .

The school building has been expanded and renovated several times in the past. The old and new buildings are connected by an auditorium . The school's own double gymnasium from 1965, which was renovated in 2005, and the sports field are also used by regional clubs ( volleyball , basketball and others). Computer science classes began in 1985 with the purchase of eight computers . There are currently two computer rooms with 16/34 student places. In 2006 the old music halls were replaced by a school canteen, in which the pupils can be catered for during afternoon lessons. Thanks to an electronic ordering system, students can order their meals via the Internet at home and via an order terminal at school, and cancel it if necessary.

The school is financially supported by the Association of Friends and Supporters of the Meranier-Gymnasium, founded in 1957, with around 400 members today.

Events

School life is enriched by many events such as poetry readings , fundraising campaigns, theater performances, concerts, balls and the like. Students are offered opportunities to spend their free time such as a sports program, free violin and cello lessons, and more.

Three times a year the college level organizes large parties in the town hall (“Q12 Session” / “K13 Session”), which are attended by young people from the district and far beyond.

The grammar school has partner schools in four countries with which regular student exchanges take place:
