The M 180 is a six-cylinder in - line engine from Daimler-Benz and was introduced in 1951 as the company's first new six-cylinder engine after the Second World War in the Mercedes-Benz W 187 .
The gasoline engine with 2.2 liters cubic capacity was initially 80 PS (59 kW); the 2.3 liter version in the Mercedes 230.6 ( W 114 , “Stroke Eight”) built until 1976 achieved 120 hp (88 kW).
history
The basic conception of the engine with a chain-driven overhead camshaft (OHC) and countercurrent cylinder head was found in the six-cylinder engines M 127 (2.2 / 2.3 l), M 108 / M 129 (2.5 l) up to the M 130 (2, 8 l), which was built for the Unimog 404 until 1980. The M 110 with a cross-flow cylinder head and two overhead camshafts (DOHC), which was produced until 1989, was based on the M-130 engine block and thus ultimately also on the M 180.
The M 123 (2.5 l) was used as early as 1976 and replaced the 2.3-liter M 180 in the Mercedes 250 of the new 123 series as the smallest six-cylinder car engine.
The use of gasoline engines in military Unimogs has the STANAG the NATO requires, as gasoline engines at that time had a better winter performance in extreme cold and both tanks and military off-road vehicles were almost complete equipped with gasoline engines. This enabled simplified fuel logistics and saved transport capacity.
