Mercedes Sagredo

Mercedes Sagredo Barruecos (born February 14, 1911 in Santiago de los Caballeros , † August 31, 1998 in New York ) was a Dominican composer.

Sagredo was a piano student of Margarita Esperón and Marina Acevedo in her youth . In 1929 she moved to New York with her husband, the poet Frank Sanchez Reyes . There she continued her training with América Baliño and René Rodríguez .

In 1940 one of her most popular compositions appeared, the song Mi Quisqueya . It was performed the following year in Santiago de los Cabelleros with the orchestra of Luis Alberti and by Dominican singers such as Lope Balaguer , Rafael Colón , Sonia Silvestre , Alberto Beltrán , Henry Ely , Fernando Casado , José Emilio Joa , Billo Frómeta and Arturo Acevedo as well as the Choir recorded on record by Marianela Sánchez .

With the Himno a la hispanidad , Sagredo won first prize at the Concurso del Día de la Raza in 1975 . She was awarded the Orden de Duarte, Sánchez y Mella by the Dominican government and received the Premio El Dorado in 1980 . In addition to songs such as Corazón de cristal , Droga de amor , Inmortal , Vicio de ti and Nostalgia lejana , she composed the Plegaria a la Virgen de la Alta Gracia , which was performed in St. Patrick's Cathedral in New York. Her book Mi vida y mi Quisqueya was published in 1994 .

She died of leukemia.
