Merkelbach is a hamlet in the eponymous district of the small town Vellberg in the Schwäbisch Hall district in northeast Baden-Württemberg .

Merkelbach is to the left of the Lanzenbach at about 371  m above sea level. NHN in its flat valley floor, which is drained on the outskirts by a shorter anonymous floodplain and the Merkelbach stream, which is only 300 meters long. The agricultural hamlet with only four house numbers and a few outbuildings is partially surrounded by a patch of orchards and pastures near the farm. Over the left slope of the valley in the southeast rises the western foothills of the Hammerberg forested and up to over 505  m above sea level. NHN high Hahnenberg , above the heather-like right in the northwest which is initially only 420  m above sea level. NHN high plowed plateau of the Schlegelsberg . After about half a kilometer down the valley, the Eschenau lime gravel works begins.

The place is on the K 2619, which , coming from Untersontheim in the neighboring municipality of Obersontheim in the south, flows after its brook bridge into the L 1064, which connects Vellberg with Gründelhardt . Less than a kilometer northeast of this is the only other hamlet Schneckenweiler von Vellberg in this valley, towards Vellberg to the west-northwest it initially runs across a small valley trail through the hamlet of Eschenau von Vellberg, which is just under a kilometer away . The next village in the southwest is the aforementioned Untersontheim, which is about two kilometers away behind the mountains. (All distances as the crow flies ).

history

In 1366 the church maintenance department of the Stöckenburg acquired the slopes for the place from a Heinz von Swelbronn. In 1580, the city ​​of Hall gave two farms to Konrad von Vellberg in exchange , which they acquired again in 1595 after his death and the extinction of this family. In 1847 the place had 34 inhabitants.

Since 1802/03 Merkelbach belonged to what was then the municipality of Unter-Sontheim. As an annex to their sub-community Eschenau , it came to Vellberg in 1875. But until April 1, 1938, the Merkelbach children still attended the Untersontheim school and the place still belonged to the local evangelical parish. Water pipe connection in 1939, sewage treatment plant connection only in 1997. Today the hamlet has 26 residents and there is even a small restaurant.
