history

In 1541, the imperial city of Hall ceded a farm and an estate to the Limpurgers , who both returned in 1563 in exchange with the Vellbergers . With Eschenau , whose community and other circumstances it subsequently shared, these goods came back to Hall after they died out in 1595. In 1847 the place had 34 inhabitants.

From 1802/03 Merkelbach belonged to what was then the community of Unter-Sontheim. As an annex to their sub-community Eschenau , it came to Vellberg in 1875. Sewage treatment plant connection only in 1997. The hamlet now has 24 residents. There is a restaurant open every Sunday.
