Merton Priory
Merton Priory was a monastery in Surrey , England from 1114 to 1538 .
The monastery was in 1114 by Gilbert Norman, Sheriff of Surrey under Henry I founded.
Augustinian canons settled in Huntingdon Monastery from 1117 onwards . It developed into a center of education.
Famous students were
- Nicholas Breakespeare ( 1125 ), who later became Pope Adrian IV. ( 1154 - 1159 )
- Thomas Becket ( 1130 ), English Lord Chancellor and Archbishop of Canterbury
- Walter of Merton , Lord Chancellor , Bishop of Rochester and founder of Merton College , Oxford - he took the name of the monastery where he was raised in the 13th century
1538 was Henry VIII. Destroy the monastery. This happened in the course of the dissolution of the English monasteries in connection with the separation of the Church of England from the Roman Catholic Church . The stones were mostly reused in the Nonsuch Palace .
Today there is a branch of the supermarket chain Sainsbury's on the site of the monastery . Remains can be seen in the pedestrian tunnel under Merantun Way, between Sainsbury's and Merton Abbey Mills.
