Mervi Markkanen was part of the Finnish national team in the first and second thirds of the 2000s. She made her international debut at the Junior World Championships in Ridnaun in 2002 , where she won the bronze medal behind Kaja Eckhoff and Nina Karassewytsch . In the relay race, she just missed another medal in fourth place. She also finished 14th in the sprint and pursuit. Also at the junior races of the European Championships in 2002 in Kontiolahti , she again missed a medal for just one place in fourth place in the relay race. In the individual she reached the seventh place, in the sprint the ninth and in the pursuit race the 12th place. At the Junior World Championships in 2003 in Kościelisko , the Finn was 16th in the individual, 20th in the sprint, tenth in the pursuit and sixth in the relay race. In 2004 Markkanen was 15th in the sprint race in Haute-Maurienne , eleventh in the pursuit and fifth in the individual and relay races. She ended her career with the juniors as she started it. In Kontiolahti, Markkanen won the bronze medal again in 2005 behind Anne Preussler and Marija Kossinowa . In the sprint she was 27th, 16th in the pursuit and tenth in the relay.
Markkanen made her debut at the beginning of the 2005/06 season in the World Cup and was 97th of a sprint and with Eija Salonen , Outi Kettunen and Kaisa Mäkäräinen as the last runner 12th in the relay competition. In the further course of the season she achieved her best relay result with these three in Oberhof with ninth place. Towards the end of the season she finished 31st in the sprint in Kontiolahti. After the season in which it was regularly used in World Cup races, only appearances in the European Cup followed in the 2006/07 season . The best results were 15th place in the singles of Cesana San Sicario and sixth place with Pirjo Urpilainen and Maija Holopainen with the relay.
