Methana ( Greek Μέθανα ) is the largest town on the Methana peninsula of the same name and was the main town of the Methana municipality until the end of 2010. Since January 1, 2011, the municipality of Methana was merged with the municipality of Trizina to form the municipality of Trizinia-Methana . Methana is a health resort known for its thermal baths , which is why its official name is Loutropoleos Methanon ( Greek Λουτροπόλεως Μεθάνων = Medicinal Bath Methana ).

The port city of Methana, together with the suburb Agios Charalambos (also called Vromolimni), which is about 1 km to the north, has 892 inhabitants. The local community Methana, which also includes the approximately 1 km northwest located place Dritseika ( Greek Δριτσαίικα , 205 inhabitants) has 1,097 inhabitants.

At the southern entrance to the village on the left is the bathhouse and in front of it the 150 m long and 50 m wide Vromolimni ( Greek Βρωμολίμνη = stink lake ), which is fed by sulfur-containing springs. There are spa treatments for rheumatism , arthritis , gynecological problems and skin diseases . Opposite is the port of Methana. To the east of the port is the small peninsula Nisaki ( Greek Νησάκι = islet ). Methana beach is located on the isthmus that connects it to the mainland. On the peninsula you can see the remains of a castle from the 4th century BC. And visit the church of Agioi Anargyroi.

There are a few restaurants and small hotels on the promenade. Here is also the landing stage for the ferries to Aegina , Poros and Piraeus .

The remains of an ancient tower and settlement remains from the Mycenaean period were found about 500 m west of Dritseika on the Throni plain . The Mycenaean sanctuary of Methana was discovered 1 km northeast of Methana in 1990 .
