The Metronom Quintett was a Swiss mainstream jazz band that was founded in 1953 as the Metronom Quartet . The line-up of the original quartet was related to the Modern Jazz Quartet ; The sound was determined by the interaction between the two founders, vibraphonist Ueli Staub and pianist Martin Hugelshofer. However, style elements of George Shearing were also recognizable in the group .

history

From 1954 the group, which had been an amateur band for many years, appeared regularly at the Zurich Jazz Festival until 1958 , where it was awarded first place in 1961. Between 1962 and 1966 the quintet was repeatedly invited to the festival in order to play “out of competition”. In 1956, the band initiated weekly jazz evenings in the Zurich Tearoom in Wellenberg, where they performed repeatedly until the official closure in 1957 and expanded into a quintet for the first time with Bruno Spoerri . The group has toured Europe since 1957, and in 1970 they toured Japan for the Osaka Expo .

Since 1979 the quintet has also participated in jazz and poetry projects, with Gert Westphal until 2002 , then with the actor Helmut Vogel.

Remarks

  1. ^ Badische Zeitung: ... the oldest Swiss jazz formation, has unfortunately disbanded
  2. Hugelshofer (born July 13, 1933 in Zurich) had classical piano lessons as a schoolboy before he founded the band mit Staub as a high school graduate. After studying business administration in St. Gallen, he first worked as a management secretary at an advertising organization, then as director of an international travel organization. Most recently he was the association secretary until his retirement.
