The Baltimore Metropolitan Area ( Baltimore-Columbia-Towson Metropolitan Statistical Area, also Central Maryland ) is a Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) in Maryland , as defined by the United States Office of Management and Budget (OMB). It is made up of the city of Baltimore and six counties. The capital of Maryland and the state authorities of the state of Maryland are located in the MSA of Baltimore, primarily in Annapolis . The metropolitan area is in turn part of the Washington-Baltimore-Northern Virginia Combined Region . According to the 2010 census, the population was 2,710,489. The metropolitan area had the fourth highest median household income in the United States, at $ 66,970 in 2012.

In 2017, the metropolitan region had a gross domestic product of 192 billion US dollars. Thanks to the affluent suburbs, the region has an above-average household income despite the rather poor core city. Notable companies headquartered in the region include WR Grace and Company , Legg Mason , AAI Corporation, and Under Armor .
