The Mettmann place is a green area at the Tegeler street in the Berlin district of Wedding between the tracks of the northern ring , the Berlin-Spandau Canal (north of North Port ) and the Fennstraße. The square is crossed by the railway bridge of the north-south long-distance railway , the so-called Überflieger , and covers an area of around 11,000 m². The square only got its name in 1986 after the twin town of the then Wedding district , the district town of Mettmann in North Rhine-Westphalia .

history

In the Hobrecht plan of 1862, the triangular square with the designation Platz A was provided. In contrast to the other squares in Wedding, the square was apparently initially not designed. With increasing development in the surrounding areas during the Wilhelminian era , small businesses settled there , including coal traders who benefited from the nearby coal station with a connection to the new Berlin connecting railway .

In the post-war period , the area around the square underwent major changes, primarily due to the settlement of the "Scheringstadt" (today: Bayer site ) on Fennstrasse. Due to an increase in motorization , the volume of traffic on Fennstrasse multiplied and it wasn't until 1970 that the bridge between Sellerstrasse and Heidestrasse ( Bundesstrasse 96 ) was relieved. The place was still used commercially at this time; the vegetation was limited to isolated trees and bushes.

When the lease contracts were terminated in the early 1980s, the area was transferred to the horticultural department. The street area still existing on the north bank was removed and integrated into the square. In 1982, according to plans by Gebauer, a multi-use green space with the advantages of a small district park was built for 960,000  marks (adjusted for purchasing power in today's currency: around 876,000 euros). In addition to play areas, a community garden and meadow areas, the square was divided by strips of wood and groups of trees. The place was named on July 11, 1986.

Due to the construction work on the planned S21 S-Bahn line , the park is currently largely inaccessible. In future, Tegeler Straße will be interrupted by the S-Bahn , which crosses almost at ground level , and will thus become a dead end on both sides . To compensate for this, the north bank road will be expanded to Fennstrasse. As Mettmannplatz will no longer be usable as a green area, compensatory measures were defined as part of the planning approval , including a. in the Sprengelkiez on Pekinger Platz as well as the newly created Sprengelpark between Kiautschoustraße and Sprengelstraße to the north .
