The Miami Manatees were an American ice hockey team based in Miami , Florida . The team played in the World Hockey Association 2 in the 2003/04 season .

history

The team was founded in 2003 as a franchise of the World Hockey Association 2 , which was held for the first time . The team was in accordance with the manatees (Engl. Manatees) named. One of these copies was also used for the official club logo. In their only season, the Manatees, who was trained by former Canadian NHL player Zac Boyer , finished fifth in the WHA2 after the regular season. This would not have been enough to reach the playoffs. However, since the Manatees only had an average attendance of less than 1,500 per game and the Miami Arena with a capacity of 14,696 as a venue caused high losses, team owner David Waronker decided to use an exit clause and relocate the team to nearby Maitland. However, this met with resistance from the players, so the decision was made to only play away games. As a result, some players left the franchise. With a shortened schedule of 48 games, the Manatees had a better point average than the Orlando Seals ahead of them and still reached the playoffs. In these they were defeated by the eventual champions Jacksonville Barracudas with 1: 2 wins in the best-of-three series, with the decisive goal in game three not falling until overtime.

When the World Hockey Association 2 was dissolved after a year, the Manatees also finally stopped playing.
