Michał Kleofas Ogiński (German: Michael Kleophas Oginski ; Lithuanian: Mykolas Kleopas Oginskis ; born September 25, 1765 in Guzów , Żyrardów district ; † October 15, 1833 in Florence ) was a Polish diplomat, politician and composer. He was Count von Ogiński and nephew of Michał Kazimierz Ogiński .

Life

Ogiński was a Polish Member of the Reichstag and Envoy Extraordinary to the Netherlands . In 1793 he became Grand Treasurer , but resigned as early as 1794 in the uprising led by Kościuszko to become chief of a regiment of hunters equipped at his own expense. After the unfortunate outcome of the battle, Ogiński fled, but returned to his Zalesie estate near Vilna in 1802 with the permission of Emperor Alexander I. After the Peace of Tilsit he moved with his family to France and Italy, returned to Poland in 1810 as senator of the Russian Empire and privy councilor, but returned to Italy in 1815.

Works

Ogiński was a violinist , but also played the clavichord and balalaika . Around 1790 he began composing marches and national chants that became popular among the rebels of 1794. He wrote a good 20 polonaise , plus other piano pieces such as mazurkas, marches, romances and waltzes. He loved French and Italian opera.

His most famous work is the Polonaise Pożegnanie Ojczyzny (“Farewell to the Fatherland”), written in 1794 during the Kościuszko uprising when he left Poland-Lithuania . Due to its devoted melancholy melodies and freely fantasizing passages, it is one of the earliest pieces of Romanticism .

His Mémoires sur la Pologne et les Polonais depuis 1788–1815 (Paris 1826, 2 vol .; German, Bellevue 1845) contain interesting information about the period between 1794 and 1798.
