The Michael-Ende-Gymnasium is a bilingual German-English high school in the Tönisvorst district of St. Tönis . It was founded in 1986 and was certified as a European school by the state government in 2011 . In 2012 the Michael-Ende-Gymnasium became a MINT Excellence Center. Furthermore, as a grammar school, it is recognized as a CertiLingua school.

The abbreviation MEG is also common.

history

The origins of the establishment of the grammar school go back to an application by a parliamentary group in the Tönisvorster city council in the spring of 1985. The plan to create a comprehensive school was rejected after a survey of all the parents of the fourth graders in the 1985/86 school year, who were clearly in favor of founding a grammar school.

On December 19, 1985, the city council of Tönisvorst decided to build a grammar school from the coming school year.

The approval of the minister of education was granted on April 16, 1986, and on September 8, 1986 the grammar school, then called "Städtisches Gymnasium Tönisvorst", started operations. Ingo Miltz became the first headmaster.

On March 5, 1987, the association was founded

As the first school in the Krefeld - Viersen area , a bilingual German-English branch was set up at the Michael-Ende-Gymnasium at the beginning of the school year 1990/91.

On August 31, 1992, the first larger extension could be moved into. This had become necessary because at that time, in addition to the grammar school, the Tönisvorst secondary school and the secondary school were holding their lessons in the Corneliusfeld school center. Another new building, the C wing, was fully opened for teaching on August 23, 1993.

The first high school graduation left school on June 23, 1995.

After the grammar school had existed for almost ten years as the “Städtisches Gymnasium Tönisvorst”, the name of the author Michael Ende, who had died the year before, was adopted as the school name on May 29, 1996.

A close partnership with the aid organization NETZ eV has existed since 2003. As part of various donation and aid projects, the grammar school was able to finance several partner schools in Bangladesh.

At the beginning of the 2009/10 school year, the MINT profile was established in addition to the classic and bilingual courses .

On November 15, 2011 the high school was certified as a European school by the state government .

Since the beginning of the 2015/16 school year, it has been possible to take Dutch as a third foreign language from the eighth or the tenth grade.

Awards

In 2006 the Michael-Ende-Gymnasium was awarded the predicate label “Best practice school” as part of the Pisa study.

As an award for the very highest standards in the field of educational work in the MINT profile, the school was named "MINT-EC" school by the TU Berlin on September 14, 2012. A quality analysis carried out at the school in November 2012 found:
