Michael John Ball (born October 2, 1979 in Liverpool ) is a former English football player .
Player career
Ball began his professional career in Everton, where he first played in 1997 when he was 17. In 2001 he made his only game for the English national football team . In 2001 Ball moved to the Glasgow Rangers for £ 6.5million . In December 2001 he tore a cruciate ligament and was out for 18 months. In the 2004/05 season he won the Scottish Premier League and the Scottish League Cup with the Rangers .
At the end of the season he was sold to PSV Eindhoven . He was under contract there until January 2007, but was only used irregularly during this time. Ball then returned to Great Britain and signed a contract with Manchester City that ran until the end of the 2008/09 season. In the 2006/07 season , Ball made negative headlines when he deliberately kicked Cristiano Ronaldo, who was lying on the ground, in the stomach on the penultimate day of the derby against Manchester United . He was then banned from the English Football Association for three games. Ball later apologized for the incident.
After a long period without a professional contract, Michael Ball signed a one-year contract with Leicester City on August 8, 2011 . After he published homophobic statements on Twitter on January 23, 2012 , Ball was fired from his club without notice the following day.
