Michael Becker (* 1966 in Osnabrück ) is a German musician and journalist as well as artistic director of the Düsseldorf Symphony Orchestra and the Tonhalle Düsseldorf .

Michael Becker comes from a family of musicians. His father Peter Becker was president of the Hanover University of Music , his mother taught a special music project for elementary schools, one of his two brothers, Markus Becker , is a pianist and professor at the Hanover University of Music. After his school days in Hanover, where he was also a member of the city's boys' choir , Michael Becker studied viola with Jürgen Kussmaul in Düsseldorf . He was a member of the Cologne Chamber Orchestra, the Junge Deutsche Philharmonie, the European Community Youth Orchestra and the orchestra of the Städtische Bühnen Krefeld / Mönchengladbach . After studying at the Institute for Journalism and Communication Research in Hanover, he worked for newspapers such as the Hannoversche Allgemeine Zeitung or Rheinischer Merkur and broadcasting companies such as Mitteldeutscher Rundfunk and Norddeutscher Rundfunk .
From 1994 to 2006 Michael Becker was the artistic director of the Lower Saxony Music Days . He has also worked closely with the NDR Radiophilharmonie. Various types of concerts were designed and moderated by him. Michael Becker taught at the Leuphana University Lüneburg and at the Robert Schumann University in Düsseldorf.
Michael Becker has been artistic director of the Tonhalle Düsseldorf and the Düsseldorfer Symphoniker since 2007. In Becker's previous tenure, the engagement of chief conductors Andrey Boreyko (2008–2014) and Ádám Fischer (since 2015) as well as the redesign of the musical leadership with Adam Fischer as Principal Conductor and Alexandre Bloch as Principal Guest Conductor fell. Becker created the “Tonhalle 0-100” system, making the Tonhalle the first concert hall in Germany to offer music for every conceivable age group, from babies to adults. He established the youth symphony orchestra of the Tonhalle Düsseldorf , founded a U-16 orchestra and a children's orchestra. His directorship also includes projects such as “Schumann2010” with the performance of the complete works of Robert Schumann and the orchestral anniversary theme “Music Power State” (2014), in which the Düsseldorfer Symphoniker dealt with its role as the orchestra of the Düsseldorfer Reichsmusiktage , the program for the 200th anniversary of the Städtischer Musikverein zu Düsseldorf (2018) or the Haydn-Mahler cycle with Adam Fischer (2015–2020).
Michael Becker is director of the Schumann Festival in Düsseldorf, member of the Theater and Orchestra Conference NRW, curator of the Hannover Girls Choir, senator of the Lower Saxony Foundation, director of the orchestra academy of the Düsseldorf Symphony Orchestra and the Friends of the Tonhalle Düsseldorf. Since August 2018 he has also been the first managing director of the newly founded Tonhalle Düsseldorf gGmbH. Becker has been moderating a symphonic concert cycle in the Elbphilharmonie since 2017 . For 2019, Michael Becker was elected Chairman of the international International Artist Managers' Association Conference, which took place from April 8 to 10, 2019 for the first time in Germany and in Düsseldorf for the first time in ten years .
Michael Becker is married to the pianist Sara Koch. They have four children together and live in Düsseldorf.
