Michael Brückner (politician, 1939)
Michael Brückner (born August 27, 1939 in Berlin ; † March 14, 1998 ibid) was a German local politician of the SPD and long-time district mayor in the Treptow district of Berlin.
Life
Born in Treptower, he completed an apprenticeship as an electrical mechanic , which was followed by studies at the Technical University in Dresden . Until the turn , he then worked as an engineer for electrical engineering first in the construction division of laundry Spindlersfeld VEB Rewatex , then in electric appliances factory Treptow and most recently in VEB Funkwerk Köpenick .
November 1989 he became a member of the newly founded Social Democratic Party in the GDR (SDP) in the Berlin-Treptow district. On May 31, 1990 , Michael Brückner , who lived in the Niederschöneweide district , was elected as the first freely elected mayor in Treptow after the fall of the Wall at the suggestion of the SPD . His tasks included building a democratic administration after more than 40 years of SED rule.
He held the office of district mayor until his sudden death in 1998 after a long-undiscovered cancer.
Brückner was married and had two sons. He found his final resting place in the Adlershof cemetery in today's Treptow-Köpenick district .
On March 15, 2004, on the occasion of Brückner's fifth anniversary of his death, Grünauer Strasse (part of the B96a ) was named Michael-Brückner-Strasse .
