Michael Burkert (born July 28, 1952 in Berlin ) is a German politician ( SPD ). He was President of the Saarbrücken City Association before he was appointed Managing Director of Saarland-Sporttoto GmbH and Saarland-Spielbanken GmbH in October 2007.

education and profession

After the technical college in 1972 at the Technical School of Economics in Neunkirchen Michael Burkert holds a degree in social work at the Catholic University of Applied Social Studies in Saarbrücken , which he in 1978 as a graduate finished -Sozialarbeiter (FH). He then worked until 1988 as a qualified social worker at the Malstatt district office , a district of Saarbrücken. From 1989 to 1991 he was a member of the management and department head at the Diakonisches Werk an der Saar. From 1991 to 1992 he was head of the social welfare office in Saarbrücken, the capital of the state of Saarland.

Political party

Initially, Michael Burkert was a member of the Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen party . In 1989 he became a member of the SPD. After 100% of the delegates expressed their confidence in him at a regional conference of the SPD in the Saarbrücken city association in 2005, he again stood as the SPD candidate for the direct election of the city association president on March 12th. With 54% support from the voters, he was able to prevail against the candidates from the CDU , Alliance 90 / Greens and the FDP . Together with his party colleagues Cornelia Hoffmann-Bethscheider , Karin Lawall and Leo Petry, he represents the regional association of the SPD Saar on the SPD party council .

Public offices

On March 16, 1992 he was appointed member of the city association. On January 1, 1994 he was promoted to First Alderman. In this role he was responsible for the areas of youth, social affairs, health, construction, the environment and planning.

In a primary election he was elected President of the Saarbrücken City Association with 54.3% of the votes cast. He is the first city association president to be elected directly by the population. He took office on October 1, 1998.

Others

Michael Burkert was chairman of the Saarland district assembly, chairman of the supervisory board of Saarland-Heilstätten and chairman of the board of directors of Sparkasse Saarbrücken , and is a member of the board of directors of Saarland broadcasting company . In an honorary capacity, he is President of the ATSV Saarbrücken and President of the German Red Cross- Saar.

For his contribution to education and cross-border relations, Michael Burkert was appointed officer of the Ordre des Palmes Académiques by the French Republic .

Michael Burkert is married and has three children. He lives with his family in Quiigart .
